Hilbert Space Operators : A Problem Solving Approach

Description

This self-contained work on Hilbert space operators takes a problem-solving approach to the subject, combining theoretical results with a wide variety of exercises that range from the straightforward to the state-of-the-art. Complete solutions to all problems are provided. The text covers the basics of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space and gradually progresses to more advanced topics in spectral theory and quasireducible operators. Written in a motivating and rigorous style, the work has few prerequisites beyond elementary functional analysis, and will appeal to graduate students and researchers in mathematics, physics, engineering, and related disciplines.

R. F. Craig: Soil Mechanics

Soil Mechanics

Description

This book is intended primarily to serve the needs of the undergraduate civil engineering student and aims at the clear explanation, in adequate depth, of the fundamental principles of soil mechanics. The understanding of these principles is considered to be an essential foundation upon which future practical experience in soils engineering can be built. The choice of material involves an element of personal opinion but the contents of this book should cover the requirements of most undergraduate courses to honours level. It is assumed that the student has no prior knowledge of the subject but has a good understanding of basic mechanics. The book includes a comprehensive range of worked examples and problems set for solution by the student to consolidate understanding of the fundamental principles and illustrate their application in simple practical situations. The International System of Units is used throughout the book. A list of references is included at the end of each chapter as an aid to the more advanced study of any particular topic. It is intended also that the book will serve as a useful source of reference for the practising engineer. In the third edition no changes have been made to the aims of the book. Except for the order of two chapters being interchanged and for minor changes in the order of material in the chapter on consolidation theory, the basic structure of the book is unaltered.

This unique text fills the gap between shorter texts, containing little explanatory material, and the compendia, for those advanced in the field of neurological disorders. It is written both for novices and for physicians who require an update on the subject. To understand the symptoms and signs requires a sound knowledge of the gross anatomy of the central nervous system and supporting tissues. This book achieves this using the author's own detailed diagrams, backed up with concise and practical guidance on diagnosis and treatment, as well as relevant case studies. The long-awaited second edition of this highly popular guide reflects such recent advances as computed Soil Mechanics pdf tomography and MRI. The tutorial approach presents readers with an authoritative view of the fundamentals of practical neurology.

Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Lands of the Linnorm Kings

Description

* This in-depth gazetteer explores the legendary Lands of the Linnorm Kings, a northern realm of larger-than-life adventure where Viking kings earn the right to rule by defeating enormous, primeval dragons - linnorms. From the rugged western islands of the Ironbound Archipelago to the battleworn expanse known as Hagreach in the east, this Pathfinder setting sourcebook contains detailed treatments of all the major locales in the region. Numerous adventure sites and campaign themes are explored in detail, such as remote troll-haunted ruins, mysterious locations linked to the eerie realm of the fey, and even a sample linnorm hunt. Rules on weregild (fees for hostages or slain enemies), effigies (mundane and magical ways to strike fear into your enemies), and reputation in this ferocious land are explored, as are several new monsters and pre-built enemy NPCs, such as remorseless longship captains, berserkers, new trolls, and the most powerful linnorm in the land - dread Fafnheir!

This easy-to-read adventure concludes with Buzz, Dad, and Fly Guy returning home on a bike. Fly Guy loves RIDEZZZ! A journey through the past and present of Europe's eastern borderlands in search of one of Austria's most seductive and disturbing 20th Century writers. Traveller, prophet, perpetual displaced person and compulsive liar, Joseph Roth's fiction and journalism embody a world twice destroyed but still strangely with us in the new millennium. In Austria and Ukraine, Dennis Marks explores the spiritual geography of a still neglected master. How much of our fate is decided before we are born? Which of our characteristics is inscribed in our DNA? Weiner brings us into Benzer's Fly Rooms at the California Institute of Technology, where Benzer, and his asssociates are in the process of finding answers, often astonishing ones, to these questions. Part biography, part thrilling scientific Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Lands of the Linnorm Kings free download pdf detective story, Time, Love, Memory forcefully demonstrates how Benzer's studies are changing our world view--and even our lives.

Branko Milanovic: Global Inequality: A New Approach for the Age of Globalization

Global Inequality: A New Approach for the Age of Globalization

Description

One of the world s leading economists of inequality, Branko Milanovic presents a bold new account of the dynamics that drive inequality on a global scale. Drawing on vast data sets and cutting-edge research, he explains the benign and malign forces that make inequality rise and fall within and among nations. He also reveals who has been helped the most by globalization, who has been held back, and what policies might tilt the balance toward economic justice. Global Inequality takes us back hundreds of years, and as far around the world as data allow, to show that inequality moves in cycles, fueled by war and disease, technological disruption, access to education, and redistribution. The recent surge of inequality in the West has been driven by the revolution in technology, just as the Industrial Revolution drove inequality 150 years ago. But even as inequality has soared within nations, it has fallen dramatically among nations, as middle-class incomes in China and India have drawn closer to the stagnating incomes of the middle classes in the developed world. A more open migration policy would reduce global inequality even further. Both American and Chinese inequality seems well entrenched and self-reproducing, though it is difficult to predict if current trends will be derailed by emerging plutocracy, populism, or war. For those who want to understand how we got where we are, where we may be heading, and what policies might help reverse that course, Milanovic s compelling explanation is the ideal place to start. "

Lauren F. Winner: Wearing God

Wearing God

Description

Lauren F. Winner a leading writer at the crossroads of culture and spirituality and author of Still and Girl Meets God joins the ranks of luminaries such as Anne Lamott and Barbara Brown Taylor with this exploration of little known and, so, little used biblical metaphors for God, metaphors which can open new doorways for our lives and spiritualities. There are hundreds of metaphors for God, but the church only uses a few familiar images: creator, judge, savior, father. In Wearing God, Lauren Winner gathers a number of lesser-known tropes, reflecting on how they work biblically and culturally, and reveals how they can deepen our spiritual lives.Exploring the notion of God as clothing, Winner reflects on how we are clothed with Christ or how God fits us like a garment. She then analyzes how clothing functions culturally to shape our ideals and identify our community, and ruminates on how this new metaphor can function to create new possibilities for our lives. For each biblical metaphor God as the vine/vintner who animates life; the lactation consultant; and the comedian, showing us our follies, for example Winner surveys the historical, literary, and cultural landscapes in order to revive and heal our souls."

A Seven Letter Word

Description

'My name is Finlay McIntosh. I can see OK, can hear perfectly fine and I can write really, really well. But the thing is, I can't speak. I'm a st-st-st-stutterer. Hilarious, isn't it? It's like the word is there in my mouth, fully formed and then, just as it's ready to leave my lips...POP! It jumps and ricochets and bounces around my gob. Except it isn't funny at all, because there's not a thing I can do about it.' Finlay's mother vanished two years ago. And ever since then his stutter has become almost unbearable. Bullied at school and ignored by his father, the only way to get out the words which are bouncing around in his head is by writing long letters to his ma which he knows she will never read, and by playing Scrabble online. But when Finlay is befriended by an online Scrabble player called Alex, everything changes. Could it be his mother secretly trying to contact him? Or is there something more sinister going on? A Seven Letter Word is an evocative and heartfelt story from the multi-award-winning author of Smart, Kim Slater.

With an Introduction and Notes by Owen Knowles, University of Hull. Thackeray's upper-class Regency world is a noisy and jostling commercial fairground, predominantly driven by acquisitive greed and soulless materialism, in which the narrator himself plays a brilliantly versatile role as a serio-comic observer. Although subtitled A Novel without a Hero, Vanity Fair follows the fortunes of two contrasting but inter-linked lives: through the retiring Amelia Sedley and the brilliant Becky Sharp, Thackeray examines the position of women in an intensely exploitative male world. When Vanity Fair was published in 1848, The Wrong Quarry free download pdf Charlotte Bronte commented: 'The more I read Thackeray'sworks the more certain I am that he stands alone - alone in his sagacity, alone in his truth, alone in his feeling...Thackeray is a Titan.'

Max Allan Collins: The Wrong Quarry

The Wrong Quarry

Description

Quarry doesn't kill just anybody these days. He restricts himself to targeting other hitmen, availing his clients of two services: eliminating the assassins, and finding out who hired them...and then removing that problem as well. So far he's rid of the world of nobody who would be missed. But this time he finds himself zeroing in on the grieving family of a missing cheerleader. Is this the right quarry?

The Telling Room: A Tale of Love, Betrayal, Revenge, and the World's Greatest Piece of Cheese

Description

"NEW YORK TIMES" BESTSELLER NAME ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR "Entertainment Weekly Kirkus Reviews The Christian Science Monitor" In the picturesque village of Guzman, Spain, in a cave dug into a hillside on the edge of town, an ancient door leads to a cramped limestone chamber known as the telling room. Containing nothing but a wooden table and two benches, this is where villagers have gathered for centuries to share their stories and secrets usually accompanied by copious amounts of wine. It was here, in the summer of 2000, that Michael Paterniti found himself listening to a larger-than-life Spanish cheesemaker named Ambrosio Molinos de las Heras as he spun an odd and compelling tale about a piece of cheese. An unusual piece of cheese. Made from an old family recipe, Ambrosio s cheese was reputed to be among the finest in the world, and was said to hold mystical qualities. Eating it, some claimed, conjured long-lost memories. But then, Ambrosio said, things had gone horribly wrong. . . . By the time the two men exited the telling room that evening, Paterniti was hooked. Soon he was fully embroiled in village life, relocating his young family to Guzman in order to chase the truth about this cheese and explore the fairy tale like place where the villagers conversed with farm animals, lived by an ancient Castilian code of honor, and made their wine and food by hand, from the grapes growing on a nearby hill and the flocks of sheep floating over the Meseta. What Paterniti ultimately discovers there in the highlands of Castile is nothing like the idyllic slow-food fable he first imagined. Instead, he s sucked into the heart of an unfolding mystery, a blood feud that includes accusations of betrayal and theft, death threats, and a murder plot. As the village begins to spill its long-held secrets, Paterniti finds himself implicated in the very story he is writing. Equal parts mystery and memoir, travelogue and history, "The Telling Room "is an astonishing work of literary nonfiction by one of our most accomplished storytellers. A moving exploration of happiness, friendship, and betrayal, "The Telling Room" introduces us to Ambrosio Molinos de las Heras, an unforgettable real-life literary hero, while also holding a mirror up to the world, fully alive to the power of stories that define and sustain us. Praise for "The Telling Room" Captivating . . . Paterniti s writing sings, whether he s talking about how food activates memory, or the joys of watching his children grow. NPR A gorgeous and impassioned monument to the art and mystery of storytelling, "The Telling Room" is rich, funny, humane, devastating, and beautiful. It made me want to applaud, it made me want to cry, it made me want to move to Spain. Michael Paterniti is a genius. Elizabeth Gilbert, author of "Eat, Pray, Love" Unforgettable . . . a must-read for all who think of Spain as magical, who consider cheese as the ultimate gift of love, who love stories of betrayal, despair, revenge and redemption. " The Wall Street Journal" "The Telling Room" embodies the spirit of slow food and life. Michael Pollan Elegant, strange, funny, and insightful, "The Telling Room" is a marvelous tale and a joyful read, a trip into a world peopled by some of the most remarkable characters and, yes, cheese in memory. Susan Orlean, author of "The Orchid Thief"" " "From the Hardcover edition.""

Will Self, Observer, Books of the Year 'O'Hagan is an attractive guide on his pilgrimage of the missed and unmissed ...His vision of modern Britain has the quality of a poetic myth, with himself as Bunyan's questing Christian and the missing as Dantesque souls in limbo.' Blake Morrison, Guardian The Telling Room: A Tale of Love, Betrayal, Revenge, and the World's Greatest Piece of Cheese ebook pdf We encounter rainbows, earthquakes, tsunamis, shooting stars, plants, animals, and an intriguing cast of characters in this extraordinary scientific voyage of discovery. Isaiah Berlin,Henry Hardy,John Gray: The Roots of Romanticism

The Roots of Romanticism

Description

In The Roots of Romanticism, one of the twentieth century's most influential philosophers dissects and assesses a movement that changed the course of history. Brilliant, fresh, immediate, and eloquent, these celebrated Mellon Lectures are a bravura intellectual performance. Isaiah Berlin surveys the many attempts to define romanticism, distills its essence, traces its developments from its first stirrings to its apotheosis, and shows how it still permeates our outlook. He ranges over a cast of some of the greatest thinkers and artists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including Kant, Rousseau, Diderot, Schiller, the Schlegels, Novalis, Goethe, Blake, Byron, and Beethoven. The ideas and attitudes of these and other figures, Berlin argues, helped to shape twentieth-century nationalism, existentialism, democracy, totalitarianism, and our ideas about heroic individuals, self-fulfillment, and the exalted place of art. This new edition, illustrated for the first time, also features a new foreword by philosopher John Gray, in which he discusses Berlin's belief that the influence of romanticism has been unpredictable and contradictory in the extreme, fuelling anti-liberal political movements but also reinvigorating liberalism; a revised text; and a new appendix that includes some of Berlin's correspondence about the lectures and the reactions to them.

Robirda shares her extensive experience with canaries in a book that offers help with everything a canary owner needs to know, from learning how to choose, house, feed, tame, and care for a single pet canary, to keeping, breeding, pairing and feeding multiple pairs. There's over a hundred informative photos, including an eye-opening series that shows a pair of canaries rearing their babies, from laying the eggs to fledging the nest. All in all a rare tour de force for any canary aficionado. Temporarily putting aside his role as playwright, director, and screen-writer, David Mamet digs deep and delivers thirty outrageously diverse vignettes. On subjects ranging from the vanishing American pool hall, family vacations, and the art The Roots of Romanticism free download pdf of being a bitch, to the role of today's actor, his celebrated contemporaries and predecessors, and his undying commitment to the theater, David Mamet's concise style, lean dialogue, and gut-wrenching honesty give us a unique view of the world as he sees it.
